The Vietnamese Language

Approximately 59 million people speak Vietnamese. As well as the native speakers in Vietnam, there is a significant number of speakers in the USA, Canada, France, Senegal and Australia. It is also used as a second language in neighbouring countries such as Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. There are three major dialects (see below how SEATONGUE can offer native linguists and translators) which correspond to the three major regions in Vietnam:

The dialect varies in terms of pronunciation and vocabulary. Also, Vietnamese is a tone language which means that the meaning of the words are dictated by the pitch in which they are spoken.

The Vietnamese written script borrows from the Chinese language and has gradually created a system called Han-Viet.
